The Portal Building Facility
NYC Police Department and NYC Transit Services Facility
The NYC Police Department and Transit Services Facility is located in the New Portal Building at Coney Island. The 33,000 SF facility will be predominately occupied by NYC Police Department's District 34 offices. The Portal Building will accommodate public access through a retail passageway connecting the terminal to Surf Avenue. All the design elements, as described below, were an integral part of a larger security program developed by NYC Transit, NYC Police Department and the design team. The final design solution incorporated interior design, lighting, preservation and commercial retail facilities requirements with an overall security and safety design system consistent with NYC Transit design guidelines and state of the art products.

The interiors provide a clear and formal articulation of public, semi public and private spaces in response to the program and security requirements. The need for a 24-hour accessible facility also necessitated the programming and design of sleeping facilities, lockers and a gym.

The facade of the three story building incorporates a restored terra cotta facade as a portal, recalling images of Coney Island's past with a tower housing a back-up power generator and strings of lighting reminiscent of the "Luna Park" lights. The Terra-Cotta colored tile, curved glass block wall and Woodland Night green metal louvers in the facility's exterior corridor unite it with the train station and adjacent commercial space. This sequencing and understanding of program goals in combination with the design of public spaces is a staple of the firm's facility design approach.
