Security Design
Washington Street Streetscape
Building Perimeter and Pedestrian Security
Because of the previously industrial nature of the Washington Market area, few open spaces or parks exist. Washington Street's amenities are important for this mixed-use TriBeCa neighborhood.

The original design provided a pedestrian corridor connecting Greenwich Street with the former WTC Plaza. The linear space, adjoined to an active roadway, posed access and security problems, as the street provided no containment or restrictions to pedestrian and vehicular circulation and no protection to the buildings along this particular stretch of street.

The design consisted of Cobblestone tree pits, stone curbs, concrete sidewalks, street trees, and Bishop's Crook lamp posts which established a vocabulary used consistently through the entire Greenwich and Washington Street open space district. In addition, vehicular access was not permitted. Decorative bollards and additional lighting provided the adjoining buildings with a safe perimeter as well as an unobstructed view corridor.
