Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project
Architectural Design Consultant
The Washington Metro is perhaps one of the world’s most distinctive transit systems, recognized for its exceptional architecture. When planning its new extension into Northern Virginia, the Metro turned to di Domenico + Partners for an exceptional architectural expression that would define its iconic image for the 21st century.

As an integral team member, dD+P is focusing on design investigations and alternative concepts for prototypical components of the new Metrorail extension. Individual design elements developed have included the Stations, Bridges and Entries.

The design goal of dD+P is to provide a design that will best serve the future growth of transit oriented communities but, at the same time, will blend with the natural beauty and organic components of the Virginia landscape. dD+P’s concept design is meant to emphasize a unity of built form in the landscape.

di Domenico + Partners proposes the highest standards of sustainability and concern for the environment in the design of the new Metrorail system. Green design is fundamental to the architectural forms and materials. The passenger environment will be infused with natural light and engineered for maximum natural ventilation. Materials have been selected that are environmentally responsible, and the designers have recommended construction procedures that are compliant with environmentally sound practices.

In all of their projects, di Domenico + Partners seek inspiration from the site and spirit of the place. For the Dulles Corridor Metrorail, the Northern Virginia landscape and the existing iconic Metro vault became the points of departure. Each of the new components is designed, individually and as a connected whole, to reinforce a distinct line identity for the new Dulles Corridor Metrorail within the Metro system.
