The Gun Hill Road Station design will correct an urban condition affecting the community it serves presently, limiting convenient access to multi-modal transit.
The current station location at the intersection of Gun Hill and White Plains Roads lies too far north to provide clearly defined transfer to local and crosstown bus lines. The existing station plaza and structures are isolated from their immediate environment and fail to complement neighborhood activity with efficient transit system service.
The station will be relocated closer to the intersection and the entire street level structure will be demolished. It will be replaced by a new intermodal transit facility featuring a station house whose design will create a public entry zone providing comfortable access to both the platform and bus transfer area. Passengers will enter a glazed headhouse at the Gun Hill Road/White Plains Road intersection where they may wait for a bus or proceed to the subway line. The glazed entry area will feature several types of glass to introduce natural light into the space while visually opening the building up to its surrounding environment.
The new station layout will provide an area of inter-modal convergence while the station architecture will fully integrate itself into the surrounding community as a new focal point of activity. |
