The Junction Boulevard (Roosevelt
Avenue) Station is an express stop on the #7
Flushing IRT Line serving the heavily
populated Fresh Meadows neighborhood of
Queens.
The project's scope of work presents several
transit and community design challenges,
including: the provision of ADA access to two
isolated island platforms and the provision
of street level access in a dense mixed-use
neighborhood to maximize the existing
station. A "kit-of-parts" approach to using
preassembled elements will minimize
disruption to train operations and the
activities of the surrounding community.
To meet these challenges, massing and
building components were developed to
integrate four new ADA compliant elevators
and a connecting pedestrian overpass into the
existing train viaduct and surrounding
low-rise, mixed-use community.
These innovative design solutions have since
become a prototype influencing future transit
station and ADA accessibility improvements.
