The Westchester Yards, where the 6 train is housed and repaired, contains train cars, tracks and other rail related equipment. The contents of the Yard are industrial in size and appearance. The transparency of the existing fence around it allows the pedestrian and driver to see through into the lot.
Security concerns for the yard and its contents, including the NYCT Master Tower, and its visual impact on the surrounding area led the MTA NYCT Government and Community Affairs Office and concerned government officials to improve the safety and visual condition of the the yard.
An initial survey along Waters Place and Eastchester Road was conducted to establish a baseline of existing conditions and concerns for the Yard. Findings from the initial survey were incorporated into a layered analysis of environmental and security concerns. A variety of safety design alternatives were presented and discussed. The final design meshed security with aesthetics.
The performance of this work required coordination with the MTA NYCT Government and Community Affairs to reduce the impact on Westchester Square Yards workers and the surrounding area. |
