Delmonico's Roof

The landmark Delmonico's Restaurant building, built in 1891, is situated in the heart of the Financial District. A distinguished restaurant for over almost a century, it was the birthplace of the now famous dessert, Baked Alaska. The roof terrace, an open flat roof garden, was designed to maximize views of Wall Street and accommodate the particular "Flatiron type" architecture of the building. The deck surface is a collage of rubber matting and timber decking that was developed in response to restrictive fire codes imposed by the New York City Building Department. The plantings are a mixture of grasses, bamboo, and shade-loving perennials; a dynamic wind-tolerant green edge to this odd-shaped terrace. Furniture includes several built-in benches, designed to view the garden and the "canyons" of Lower Manhattan.
