dD+P was retained by the NYC SCA for the design of a new 44,605 SF, 216 student capacity PS 256Q school building which will be built next door to the original school as a result of damage done from Super Storm Sandy. The new facility will adhere to FEMA flood standards and offer 4 floors of classrooms, a library, cafeteria, and administrative spaces.

The school has a large population of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Pre-K - 5th grade, prompting the design team’s extra attention to strategies for special needs students. Careful color coding and wayfinding balance the range of hyper and hyposensitivity experienced by these students. The integration of double hand rails, sensory equipment, and flexible furniture also accommodate student needs and a specialized teaching approach.
